Web viral for Björn Borg underwear

Last month I worked with Björn Borg to create a 'flash mob' style web viral video for them. The idea was to surprise shoppers at Selfridges by doing an unannounced dance performance to the soundtrack of Abba and film the public's reactions to it... Oh and the dancers did the whole thing dressed in outrageous, brightly coloured Bjorn Borg underwear too; So plenty of reactions! Subtlety was out the window as it was intended to be fun and cheeky. Portrait work for BBC

Back on the square guvnah: I was asked back to the BBC Elstree studios this month to shoot some portraits with Eastenders actor Jacqueline Jossa; You may recognise her as she plays Lauren Branning in the soap. Jacqueline has been nominated for 'Best Newcomer' at this years National Television Awards. Its slightly surreal being on the set of Eastenders anyway, but when you are being heckled by Billy Mitchell and Max Branning mid shoot, its even more bizarre. Fortunately Jacqueline is a pro and wasn't phased by her audience. Here are a couple of the images from the session.

Adidas - Andy Murray, David Haye and Example get to grips with Brazilian street tennis.

Under strict secrecy instructions, I was invited to photograph tennis champ Andy Murray, heavyweight boxing star David Haye and pop musician Example, playing Brazilian road tennis for Adidas in a secret warehouse in Shoreditch. They were all there to try the game for the first time and launch the promotion of the new Adipower Barricade 7.0 trainers. Introducing them to the game was current world champion Sylvain "Lama" Barnettone.

It was the first time I had heard of or seen Brazilian road tennis and the first time Andy, David and Example had played too. It was all very relaxed in between games but as soon as the competition started the competitive element kicked in and they all had something to prove. Unsurprisingly Andy Murray won it and looked by far the strongest player with lightening quick reactions.

Vans / Office shoes Campaign - Images running nationally.

This week Vans and Office shoes launched their 2011 "Classic Tales" collaboration campaign. Vans have been working with Office on a range of footwear that is exclusive to Office and only available in their shops. They are classic Vans styles but have been created in new colour ways and fabrics. I shot the 2010 campaign and was hired again to shoot this years. If you're in London head down to the flagship store on Carnaby street or Westfields to see the shoes and some extravagant visual merchandising involving 12 LCD screens with my shots running on a revolving slideshow. The images will also be on display nationally at larger stores around the UK.

Happy Halloween

I'm very pleased to be releasing my second music video to date; Pixelord / Kidkanevil - Fish Touch. Its been out less than 24 hours and has already received 3,500 views.

Now please don't judge me on this personally. It is a bit of a weird one, but don't worry, I haven't lost my mind! :o) Its a strange track and as such required an appropriate video to match the audio! It is Halloween after all!

Soundwave Croatia Festival

If you haven't been to Soundwave festival in Croatia before then you should book some tickets for next years event while there still are some. I can honestly say it is hands down one of the best festivals out there. Its set in some really beautiful woodland on a peninsular of the Croatian coast, with a tiny idilic fishing village to the North. The music is a great, if you like Funk/Soul/Hip-Hop/Breaks/Electronica/Jazz etc and the atmosphere is friendly. Oh and its really sunny too!

I was commissioned to photograph the event by the festival organisers. Here are some shots from the weekend.

Shooting Portraits with Roots Manuva

I recently had the pleasure of shooting some portraits with Roots Manuva. The shots were going to be used for Press and PR to promote his forthcoming headline show at Soundwave Croatia Festival as well as his new album launch.

I've been a fan of his work for years now and did a brief and friendly portrait session with him a few years back so I was excited to be doing at again. This time we had Melody Maker there to style him up with several slick suits and a great venue in Shoreditch, East London to do the pictures. Roots is very much a gentleman and was easy and fun to work with.

Here are a few of the shots from the session. Ninja Tune are syndicating them now so keep an eye out as they will be popping up here and there as the new album drops. (NERD ALERT: I shot the top one on beautiful 120mm medium format film).

Shooting in California

Earlier this year I was commissioned for a job in Tahoe to shoot a feature with up and coming British athletes Billy Morgan, Andy Nudds and Matt Macwhirter. I've had to hold off on showing the photos until now, but they are in print now so here are a few from the trip...

As well as the snowboarding photos, I took the opportunity to shoot some photographs for my ongoing "point & click" snapshot series while in SF.

Shooting the moon scape in Austria

A while back I was hired to do a 5 day shoot for Whitelines in western Austria. The place we were shooting was in a stunning valley and each day we had to drive past this enormous reservoir to get up the mountain for the shoot.

Most of the year the reservoir remains only partially full and only fills up in the summer when all the snow melts off the mountains. This meant that the up hill section was totally bare and driving past it looked like some sort of bizarre moon scape. I kept thinking what a fantastic place it would be to shoot something, so I quickly got on the case and organised a model to head up there for a look round, with an aim to shoot something dramatic. I had a very small team (i.e. me plus 1 assistant and the model!) and we basically freestyled these images with what we had.

I love shooting like this sometimes. It really opens up possibilities for something spontaneous and I love the challenge to think on your feet and come up with something special, without having the usual pre planning or an art director telling you how they want it.

Rodigan and Toddla T for Red Bull

I was excited to be invited along to the Red Bull Music Academy in London this summer to photograph David Rodigan (Reggae/Dub legend/Maths teacher look a like) and his younger counterpart Toddla T (new hot shot dancehall producer). They were both giving a talk about their musical influences and how they started out. Not only were their stories very interesting (especially Rodigan), but they were both really down to earth nice guys. Always refreshing to work with people who don't take themselves too seriously.

After the talk they both performed a live set for Red Bull Radio and here a few photos I shot from the session.

Guest talk at The World Photography Festival at Somerset House, London

At the start of the summer I was invited to give a guest talk about my work at The World Photography Festival at Somerset House. I was invited by Somethink Blue Magazine (who kindly sent over these photos of me looking like an odd ball - thanks chaps).

It was an opportunity to talk about the images I have worked on over the past 4 years being freelance, both personal projects and commercial work. I also chatted about the industry side of things for my commercial work and my experiences in the current climate.

It was slightly daunting at first, talking to a large audience of photography fans, all sat staring at you, (especially as there had been some fantastic work on display from other photographers who were there before hand), but it turned out to be great fun in the end and I suitably rambled my way through.

BBC Eastenders E20 press and promo shots

A couple of weeks ago I was hired by the lovely folks at the BBC to shoot the press and promo images for the forthcoming Eastenders E20 show. The show is due to air this September and they have just released a sneak preview to introduce the new cast members for series 3. Check out the details here at the BBC site.

It was slightly surreal being on Albert Square after seeing it for so many years on TV and was much smaller than I had imagined. It was exciting to work with the team there and I will post the rest of the shots once the BBC have gone live with them this September. Watch this space.

Buraka Som Sistema recording at Red Bull Studios London

Bears Killing Bears - Too Familiar video shoot

I was recently asked to shoot a music video for Leeds metal heads Bears Killing Bears, which was exciting in also slightly nerve racking as have only ever shot stills. Nevertheless I relished the challenge and decided to jump right in. It was definitely a very different style of making images than I'm used to but I really enjoyed the challenge. The video, for the bands debut single, 'Too Familiar' is pretty heavy so I wanted something to reflect that. I produced, directed, shot and edited the project.

Bottletop is a forward thinking charity based in London who successfully produce high end fashion accessories, made by some of the poorest communities in Brazil, BUT they ensure that everyone is treated fairly and paid properly along the way!

The best part is that the bulk of the products they manufacture come from discarded ring pulls from drinks cans. Its a win win situation for all parties.

It was a pleasure to get involved with the team and shoot their new range for them. Here are a couple of the shots. Check out their website for more info on buying one.

OK, so I'll admit it. Hands up, I have been a wee bit slack at keeping this blog up to date. I can honestly say that the last couple of months have been my busiest months yet however. I have travelled over 20107 miles to make photos since I last posted!

Last month also saw me into my 4th year working as a full time freelance so I'll take it as a positive message that I'm doing something right. Anyway, I will no try and keep things much more regular and up to date.

Forthcoming solo exhibition - "East of my Youth and the West of my Future"

A happy new year to all!

It gives me great pleasure to announce that I will be holding my first solo exhibition in London next month. It would be great to see as many people on the opening night as possible, so please come and say hello and see the photographs if you're in East London. The opening night is Thursday 3rd February from 6:30 until 1am. It is being held at City Arts and Music Project and will run for one month. The full details are below:

"East of My Youth and the West of My Future" is a series of stunning images shot by Dan Medhurst during a six-month trip that began in the Far East and ended on the West Coast of America. The exhibition takes its title from a line in the book “On the Road” by Jack Kerouac because it reflected Dan’s own experiences on what he described as “a remarkable journey”. Armed only with an old Nikon 35mm SLR, all of the images were shot on film (69 rolls to be precise).

The exhibition is a mixture of spontaneous portraiture and landscapes. Dan says he took a detour from the conventional tourist spots, as that would enable him to focus on interesting and eccentric characters. The photos at the exhibition consequently offer a unique look at the different cultures he encountered. They celebrate not only the subject’s individuality, but also their surroundings.

Music on the opening night will be performed live by Kidkanevil from 9:00pm until 10:00pm and then DJing from 10:00pm until 1:00am.

Kidkanevil has been steadily making a name for himself with an impressive back catalogue of inventive productions and remixes under his belt. Combining Eastern and Western styles of music and culture this much in demand DJ/producer will be showcasing a live set of his own work that reflects this passion.

Opening Night Thursday 3rd February 2011. Thereafter the exhibition will be open Friday 4th February to Wednesday 2nd March 2011. Opening times may vary. See http://www.thecamplondon.com/ for more details.

Office Shoes

I recently shot some images of the new Vans range that will be stocked exclusively by Office shoes as part of a launch campaign for the visual merchandising and a feature in the Office magazine.

It shoot focused around cycling, particularly fixed gear riders and had Andy Ellis (from Fixed magazine), Chris Delia and Monique Kawecki modeling/riding for it.

If you are in London over Christmas (and a brave enough to face the crowds) head down to Carnaby Street where you can see a selection of the images I made, printed large in the window of Office shoes. Here are a few snap shots of the shop, the magazine and the original photographs I shot.

Here's a few cuttings from some recent work I've had published in Whitelines plus a little bit they wrote on me (where they basically take the piss, calling me Dan Ashcroft from Nathan Barley - The "terrible tash" is long gone by the way).

The first issue (with Gary Greenshields on the cover) has shots I did up in Aviemore, Scotland last spring and the second (Halloween Issue) has some portraits I did of snowboarding legend Gigi Ruf while he was in London for the premier of his new film, 9191.

The Reason Snowboard Magazine

If you haven't seen The Reason snowboard magazine, Its well worth a look. Its really nicely produced on heavy stock, beautifully designed, nicely written, has lots of great photos and the best part is its free!

I was contacted by the editor to submit images for issue 1 and sent in this shot of Ian Ashmore (of Dalikfodda fame) snowboarding in Leeds, England of all places. Leeds was unusually snowy during December 2009 and January 2010 so we made the most of it and went round the city looking for spots to shoot.

Here is the shot that was published of Ian and a couple of shots of the magazine.

Cancer Bats European Tour for Vans

Earlier this year I was commissioned by Vans to head out to Holland to meet up with Canadian hardcore band Cancer Bats, to join them on the road for 5 dates of their European tour. The images are now in print so I am able to post them here!

This was definitely one of the most fun jobs I've had this year. The band are all very nice, down to earth guys who were very welcoming. I traveled on the tour bus with them through Holland and into Germany for 5 days in total. I chose to shoot all the images along the trip on 35mm film, to give it some rock and roll authenticity. Vans used the images in the windows of their flag ship shops around the UK and as part of a graphic for a print campaign. Check out the last picture of them printed big in the window of the London Carnaby street shop (apologies for the shoddy iphone quality!).

They were interested in a personal project I've been working on this year called "Point and Click". I made all the images for the project using an old pocket sized Russian 35mm camera. Red Bull kindly asked me to head down to their super posh recording studios near Tower Bridge, London, to photograph Kano recording and rehearsing with his new band. The band has been assembled for Kano's live show and has a string (who are part of the Gorillaz live band) and brass section as well as drums, bass and guitar! Kano was a really nice guy and a pleasure to shoot with. Here are a few of the shots from the session, the rest can be viewed here.

Shooting in Chile for Relentless

At the end of last month I was fortunate enough to be asked by the people at Relentless if I would like to fly to Chile and shoot some images for them... Obviously I said yes!

Myself, two film guys, the Relentless team manager, Gary Greenshields, Tyler Chorlton, Jenny Jones, Dom Harington and Joe Tyler flew 18 hour to Santiago via Madrid. We landed, delirious to find that Chile is a fantastic and vibrant country with some crazy vistas and landscapes and the local people we met we're all very welcoming and friendly.

I can't give too much away or post too many photos as they will be in print in Whitelines, Huck,Onboard and Cooler magazine very shortly. Needless to say that although we worked really hard for 10 days it was a lot of fun too. As soon as the magazines are in print I will post more images. In the mean time here are some 35mm film "point and click" shots to look at.

Outlook Festival 2010

Its been a while since I updated this blog and thats because September has been one super busy month!

I kicked off the month by flying to Croatia to photograph the Outlook Festival. Outlook is Europes biggest dub and bass music festival and has grown in the 3 years its been running. This year the organisers also chose to have the festival in an ancient crumbling ruin that used to be a hill top fortress. This all made for a very dramatic back drop for such dirty bass heavy music...

It was a really fun assignment and I hope I'm asked back to cover next years. Here are some shots from the festival...

Diplo recording with Lee Scratch Perry

Last week I was asked to photograph Diplo recording with Lee Scratch Perry by the lovely people at The Red Bull Music Academy. Lee had flown in especially to guest on Diplo's forthcoming single and play a surprise show at the Notting Hill Carnival with Major Lazer. The track sounded really good, I'm sure it will be big when its been mixed and mastered. Watch this space.

This month I was lucky enough to be asked to fly out to Croatia to photograph this years Soundwave Festival. The festival has only been going for 2 years but already has a huge following and looks set to grow next year too. As well as photographing some great musicians and the epic scenery surrounding the site, I met a lot of really friendly festival goers who really made the festival what it was.

This month I was commissioned by Nexush to travel north to the Newcastle site of GoApe, to shoot some stills and some video work. The video work will be cut into a 30 second TV commercial and aired in the North of England. The stills work will be used as part of a print and internet campaign with some of the images being cut up by the Nexush design team to create online animations. It was a really fun job and I can't wait to see what Nexush do with the final product.

Glastonbury 2010

Last week I photographed award winning garden designer Adam Frost, on location in the gardens that he worked with on BBC gardening personality Geoff Hamilton. Adam was very gracious and showed around the different parts of the garden that he helped design and build over 15 years ago.

Now he runs his own garden design company working on private commissions and teaching gardening courses.

Whitelines 2010/2011 winter product photo shoot

At the end of last week I shot a commission for the Whitelines 2010/2011 winter buyers guide.

It took a lot of organising and setting up but it was a great fun to shoot and I was fortunate enough to have a team of people helping out on shoot. Thanks to everyone involved for your hard work.

Whitelines were happy to give me free run for the visual concept (which doesn't happen very often!) so I was really pleased when the final images came out exactly as planned. The results look fantastic (if I do say so myself) and they will be in print (as well as online) at the start of next winter season.

I wish I could say/show more but as ever its hush hush until its on paper. Watch this space...

Last week I worked with Diabetes UK on a publicity and PR shoot in conjunction with Nonsense London. We were shooting to produce some clean, fresh images for a new nationwide health campaign that the charity will be launching next month.

Joe Freeman from Diabetes UK was shooting some "behind the scenes" photographs during the day and was kind enough to send me these through.

New work in Whitelines Magazine

Its been in shops for a while but I have only just seen a copy of Issue 90 of Whitelines magazine; The Photo Issue. They printed one of my photos that I shot of Jonny Russell snowboarding in that famous alpine resort, Leeds, over the snowy period in January.

As well as the photo printed up in the gallery section, they also were kind enough to write a small piece about me in the contributors section.

Cancer Bats European Tour for Vans

Well the last couple of weeks have been very hectic (no change there) and I had the pleasure of joining Canadian metal band Cancer Bats on their European tour. This has definitely been one of the most fun jobs I've had in a while and it was even better as all the guys in the band and their entourage were all very welcoming.

The band have been sponsored by Vans who asked me to join them on the road for several dates throughout Holland and Germany to get some shots for advertising. While I can't post any of the images from the tour yet I have added a couple of low quality images from my phone in the mean time. The ads will run late this summer so keep a look out in magazines and shop windows.

I didn't realise but I have just been informed that I have a picture I shot last year in Fixed Magazine. Not this cover shot but a photo I did with Leeds Alley Cat champion Warren Anderton in torrential rain...

I've been sent this photo of the shot in print and have been told by the editor that I have a copy of the mag on the way so I shall update with a better photo once I have it.

Shooting for Whitelines in Scotland

We have been putting an article together for the magazine and covering the Vans snowboard competition - Dawn of the Shed, which boasted the biggest ever kicker in the UK. Tokyo Ghetto article in Cooler Magazine

Check out this months Cooler Magazine to see an editorial feature I shot last summer covering the story of "The Ghetto" in Tokyo. The Ghetto isn't a run down area of Tokyo, (I'm not sure such an area exists) it is in fact a converted love hotel that now boasts a skatepark, art gallery, rock venue and a couple of skate shops. I'll be posting the original neg scans soon and some better shots of the mag once I have a copy (these shots were kindly sent to me).

Canadian Roadtrip

Greetings from Canada this time! I'm currently undergoing a commission for Whitelines magazine out in British Colombia. This is my first time in Canada and the locals have been very welcoming along the way... I can't disclose too much at this stage but we are heading north from Vancouver through the mountains stopping along the way to shoot. Here are a couple of quick snappys to see in the meantime (apologies for the shoddy quality of the aeroplane photo - I shot it on my phone!!).

Hyde Belts, London are a fairly new brand but have already made a name for themselves for producing quality designed and quality manufactured belts that are now selling through outlets like ASOS.

I was invited to get involved and shoot some concept product photography for their look book/sales catalogue. I worked with the talented art director Niklas Dahlbeck, to create the set of images which reflected the brands London eccentric vintage image.

Fenchurch Shoot

I spent all day yesterday shooting images for the Spring Summer 2010 campaign. I can't post any of the images from the actual shoot until they have been released but here is a shot I took in the location we shot everything. It was in an old pub in South London that has been renovated and tuned into a "studio" for photography and Video. A really great venue with character and quirky individuality! A mental weekend

This weekend was a hecktic one. I did some work for Vans on Friday, some military images for ASI Magazine and then some promo press shots for New Mastersounds to round it off. New Mastersounds Recording

I shot some photographs of the New Mastersounds recording their forthcoming album "Ten Years On" last year for album artwork. While I was there Simon (the drummer) asked me to film the recording of "San Frantico" which he has edited into this short clip. The quality of the visuals isn't great as it was done on a consumer video camera, but the quality of the band is definitely apparent! Check it out.

Album Covershot - The New Mastersounds // Ten Years On

I just received my copy of the latest New Mastersounds album - Ten Years On. This is the Japanese release but there is a global release coming out on 16th November.

I shot the cover with the band last year in Leeds. The photo wasn't originally intended to be used as the cover image but a press shot for One Note Records, it was a popular image however and was selected for use with Satoshi Oguris' design.

New Mastersounds are an amazing band and they haven't failed to deliver with this album.

Sneak Peak

After what seems to have taken an age is the first of a series of images I shot this summer. There are photos from Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Hong Kong, Japan and the US. They were all shot using standard 35mm negative film. The colour is scanned the black and white should be back from the lab this week.

I'm really looking forward exhibiting the whole lot together but until then, heres a few to check out until then.

Back in Blighty - Ryan McGinley Exhibition

I'm back in the UK now and have been wading through an absolute mountain of negatives from this summer, getting them scanned and organised ready for publishing. I shall post a sneak peak later.

In between all this I managed to find some time to go and see the new Ryan McGinley 'Moonmilk' Exhibition, which I thought was stunning. If you have the time to get down to Oxford Street its well worth a trip. Ryan has made some really beautiful photographs.

Things have been a little quite on the blog for a while and this is because I have been on the road shooting some personal work in Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Hong Kong and Japan. Almost everything I have shot has been film so it will be some time before I get the films to the lab to be developed. I will get a few digi snaps shots up in the meantime though.

Having logged into my account after almost a month, I have noticed that one of my most popular images is now (almost) at 30,000 views on flickr. It is the snowboard shot of Vans rider Will Hughes doing a powder turn at night... It also featured on the front of the 50th Special edition of Document Snowboard Magazine. If you haven't seen it, take a look.

Adverts for Nike

This weekend I had the pleasure of shooting some ads work for Nike in sunny north Devon. The images are going to be used for the forthcoming Nike 6.0 surf campaign and were all shot in Croyde. I shot a whole load of lifestyle and portrait photographs with 4 of their sponsored surfers. We shot all day and into the evening, traveling around the bay to different locations to shoot. Its easy to forget how beautiful Britain is when your stuck in the city but Devon really brings it back. What an amazing place.

I can't reveal much more about the shoot until the ads are in print so I have added two shots of the beautiful hotel I was put up in... can't grumble!

The Abattoir

Its been a little while since I've written on here so I thought it was time for an update. Apart from several small jobs there has been a lot going on behind the scenes.

The main project being a collaboration between myself and artist Sami Graystone. Together we planned, funded and styled a series of art/fashion images in an abattoir.

Sami has a real artistic sense of style and I was excited to work with her on the project. She helped create some bespoke garments and worked on the styling for the shoot.

The images are intended to blur the line between art and fashion, and are intended to be confrontational, anomalous and beautiful all at the same time. We shot them in a giant fridge full of real meat for authenticity and hope to exhibit the full series this autumn. Watch this space.

There will eventually be a short video behind the scenes and there are two sneak previews below in the mean time...

Bonafied Magazine

I just received word from the lovely chaps at Bonafide magazine that long awaited (difficult second album) second issue of the mag is now in print.

I shot some images for them a while back now to use as press/promo and artwork and its great to finally see it in fruition. Bonafide has very much been a labour of love for James, Paul and David, who started the magazine with the aim of creating a coffee table publication that is both editorially and visually exciting. It is all things art/music/graphics. Check out the website for details on where to buy your copy.

ATTIK Noise 5 Book Launch

Last week I had the pleasure of attending the launch of ATTIK's 5th design book - Noise 5. The book is a showcase of graphics, artwork, photography and print processes, created by the agencies designers around the world. I shot some images for them which you can see on their blog here as well as some more info on the book.

The finished article is very impressive with a whole host of new printing techniques as well as some inspiring design and artwork.

I'm out in Laxx, Switzerland this week to cover the British Snowboard Championships with Document Snowboard Magazine. Its been fantastic so far... We've been making the most of the amazing snow conditions here before the event starts and have had a couple of days off, riding around the mountain before the work starts. Its times like these that make me really enjoy what I do for a living. Over and out.

I've had to sit on these for quite some time as Nike wanted an exclusive release of the images but finally they are out. They have been sent round various publications and have a main feature running in Whitelines magazine called Primary Colours (im chasing a copy to post here)...

Snowboarding in Yorkshire

After a few days snow in the UK last month the whole country (predictably) ground to a hault. A real pain for business's but for UK Snowboarders a real gift. I head out to meet with some British snowboarders in Leeds and spent the day shooting them riding obstacles they normally couldn't dream of doing. There were a couple of shots in last months Document Snowboard Mag and I have added a few here too.

Well - A lot has been happening....

The exhibition went really well and I got some really great feedback and also some exciting client work out of it too. I had forgotten what a massive job it is to set up and put on an exhibition is. It was a lot of work but happily it worked out well. Thanks (all be it very late) to all the people who came down to see it.

I've added some new work to the recent work section - I shot a lot of it a while ago but have had to hold back on publishing it until the images were in print.

Under The Radar

Exhibition at Arts Café

For anyone who is Leeds based, I have a small exhibition currently running at Arts Café on Call Lane, Leeds. It will be running until the start of the new year. If your interested, I have 16 prints on display to check out while you have a quiet beer/tea.... The Sunday roast they have there is pretty damn special too if you really need an excuse.

Kidkanevil portraits in Hip-Hop Connection Magazine

After 3 weeks flat out I finally found some time to 'blog' it up innit. Quite a lots been on and yet nothing I can post about just yet.

I did however, get a copy of Hip-Hop Connection sent through with an article on the highly talented beat maker Kidkanevil. I've known Mr Kanevil for a couple of years now and hes a really nice guy, as well as being seriously good at what he does. He's already toured the UK with DJ Shadow and he's only just released his second lp on Firstword! Not bad going.

He's got a full page feature with two of my photographs. We shot them a while back now.... On the highly glamourous, and exceptionally exclusive, Leeds inner city ring road. Not the nicest place to shoot but it was a good laugh doing them though. All the cars beeped at us as they went past. Its good to see them in print finally.

New Mamiya RZ67 Pro II has arrived

Last Friday I had the pleasure of picking up my new Mamiya RZ67 Pro II. I know its geeky to get excited about it, but its such a beautiful camera. I have wanted one for ages and its great to finally have one to shoot with.

It produces 6x7cm negatives which means superior quality! Before I was a full time photographer I always shot film and used to be very 'anti digital'. When I went freelance I had to make the transition to actually make some money from commercial photography. I love digi now, but have missed the premium quality and fine grain you only get from film.

I did these yesterday to test everything was working correctly. Its the special needs series.

Photography for Nike

Last week was an immensely busy week of shooting and retouching, hence the lack of blog posts, but amidst it all I had a shoot for Nike! It was a very exciting project and was organised to promote their snowboard division of Nike 6.0, with a really fun concept to boot. It was a really, really long, very stressful job that started at 8pm and finished at 6:30am!! I was shattered by the end of it but pleased with what we had achieved. I can't post any of the final images yet as Nike want to retrain exclusivity until they go to press with them but here is a shot that is 'safe to post'.

I will be uploading the final images once they are in print. Watch this space.

Gary Greenshields portraits in Whitelines Magazine

Just got my copy of the November issue of Whitelines Snowboard Magazine through, featuring some portrait shots I did with Burton pro snowboarder Gary Greenshields. I shot the photographs with Gary in France, earlier on in the summer.

I had met him briefly before on a job in Austria in 2007, but I got to know him a little better this time round and hes a real genuine guy, as well as being an absolute hero on a snowboard. Check out Dominic Zimmermann's shot of Gary jumping over the super pipe, also in this months mag. Insane; would be an accurate discription of it!

The day I met Dr Lonnie Smith...

Yesterday I had the pleasure of a short portrait sitting with New York Jazz legend Dr Lonnie Smith. I had heard of him before, as I am a fan of that era of music, but I hadn't really heard his records. I went along to his gig the same evening not really knowing what to expect and was blown away. Great music and the respect he got from the crowd was stunning. I hadn't realised how much of a big deal he was until that moment! What a guy. Lonnie was a really nice fella and was full of wisdom and I hope that I'm as cool as him when im 66 years old!

Kings Cross at 8:30am

... is the way I feel right now (in a good way though). Its been a manic last couple of weeks and I've done a couple of thousand miles up and down various motorways, but its been good work and I have got some exciting new stuff for the portfolio and hopefully, a couple of new pies to stick my fingers into as well.

I've had one day off shooting in the last 10 days and that was full of meetings. Looking forward to a day to myself one day next week.... Over and out.

Fenchurch Freaky Mannequin Product Shoot

This week I've been working on a colossal product shoot, doing an entire range of mens and womens clothes for Fenchurch's online shop. Its been long hours and lots of faffing around to get everything looking perfect. This time round they wanted to keep everything neutral and use white mannequins insead of models. I don't know if its just me but there is something really creepy and sinister about mannequins.... see for yourself.

It was a bizarrely hot and sunny October day in London today. Slightly worrying that it was hotter than most of the days we've had this summer and its mid October, but enjoyable non the less; The positive side to global warming eh!? It was nice to take some time off to visit the Southbank and check out whats new at the Tate and the Design Museum. I got told off for attempting to take a couple of snap shots at both venues amusingly.

I had a quick look in the Design Museum bookshop on the way out and randomly found some of my photos in Grafik Magazine. Grafik has some quality stuff in and is well worth a read if your into design, typography, art or photography.

Old Skool - Peanut Butter Wolf

Been going through a load of old photographs and negatives today, trying to get them assembled in some kind of order and I came across this old print I did about 5 years ago - when I used to be super keen and take a medium format camera to a gig. Its a super grainy shot and a little soft but I like it any how. Bring back medium format! The shot is of Peanut Butter Wolf, Hip-Hop DJ/Producer and founder of Stones Throw Records. Thafe.

Shooting Noise promo for ATTIK

Last week I had a short shoot with the guys from ATTIK. James Sommerville (Co founder of ATTIK) asked me to shoot some images to promote the launch of the latest Noise book by all the designers at ATTIK. Noise is an oppotunity for the designers to show off their non commecial work and really have creative freedom with what they output.

It was a pleasure working with them and they kind enough to arrange a very luxurious, glamourous location for the photographs - a dilapidated, crumbling car park in a rough part of Leeds. Lush! It may have been grubby (and smell a little bit of wee) but it was perfect for what they were after. They wanted a plush lounge set up in a broken down grimy location. Look out for press with a shot similar to above in the press over the next few weeks.

New Projects in the pipeline

I'm excited to be working on a new self motivated project. I'm keeping it under wraps until I have several images that I can use as a series. Its going to be an on going, ever expanding series that will build into a large body of work. Its a new direction in photography for me and conceptually I'm really happy with it. Its going to be and 'art' piece (If I can say that without cringing everyone out). I will reveal all very soon.x

Two days until Broadband!

Having been completely messed around by Sky for well over three weeks and having either no internet connection, or at best, a connection that resembles dial up, I have sacked them off out of shear frustration.

An engineer from Virgin should be arriving on Wednesday (im holding my breath here) to fit my new connection. I've heard plenty of horror stories about Virgin's service too, but after Sky's service I'm willing to give them a go.

Fingers crossed it will be sorted swiftly and I won't have to hang around in coffee shops, consuming too much caffeine to get my emails anymore.
